Word Press Plugin for Static Pages

Am I the only one that thinks it’s a bit silly to create one template for your blog, one for your CMS, one for your discussion board, and yet another for static pages you upload?

Because very rarely are you going to create ALL of your content within the confines of even the very best blog or CMS apps.

For example, let’s say you need a nifty contact form on your site. You create or get your hands on one you like and you FTP it to your site. What about the template?

There are several ways to solve this problem but the best solution would be to upload your files to a specific directory and have them automagically woven into your pre-existing blog or CMS template.

The Solution » Static Jack Plugin for WordPress

I’ve created a simple plugin that allows for static (*psuedo static) content to play nice with the template, theme, skin, or whatever you like to call it.

I have more info on Static Jack and some examples.

Please download Static Jack. Play with it. Enjoy it.

If you like it, please link back to me.

* I say psuedo static pages because a php page is in no way ’static’. It can change every time you view it. So it’s a misnomer to call it a static page.

The point I’m trying to get across is that these are files you can upload. They’re not generated from a database query, like posts and the newer WordPress ‘pages’ are.

I’d like to try out your plugin but when I unzip the files I get “Access Denied” when I try to open them.

I just downloaded the zip archive from my site and they extracted just fine. Send me an email at wp[At-nospam]jackborn.com and I’ll see if I can send you the archive directly.

    Hi -

Your staticJack plugin for WP is great. I’ve run into a problem, though, trying to use it with PHP calculator here: http://www.reverse-mortgage-information.org/blog/retirement-calculator.php

I’m not a programmer or anything, but basically the calculator results return all zeroes. The calculator works fine used outside of staticJack: http://www.reverse-mortgage-information.org/retirement-calculator.php

But the presentation isn’t the same.

Any ideas on how SJ might affect the code or what I should be looking for? the calculator has 5 separate files all of which I place in the static directory.

Thanks for a great plugin and double thanks if you can help at all with this problem.

OK. I just downloaded the Safeinclude plugin and saw the “Don’t Bother Me” comments in the readme file. Sorry for the previous “help request” post.

Anyway, after fiddling with Safeinclude and the php files, I’ve gotten things to work fine. Thanks again for great plugins.

    Tim,
    You’re welcome.

I have been trying to come up with something just like this. I have been doing my static pages using skel templates. They have the loop in it with my new code. This works, but I like your idea, way better. I have created so many pages in my theme dir; can’t tell you how many times at four in the morning I edited the wrong page. I like having them all isolated in a different dir. Just wanted to say thanks!

    I owe you,

    JHB

I also wanted to say thanks. You saved me from a lot of merging older things into my blog. this is what I’ve been looking for for a while. One question: Is there a way to enable the plugin to recognize subdirectories within the static directory? I keep getting the error page when I point my browser to a file inside a sub, but works fine while navigating links though. Again a million thanks!
